Apprentice Lineman

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Job Title:         Apprentice Lineman        

Department:    Operations      

Reports To:     Crew Chief                                         

Position           To assist the senior apprentices and First Class Linemen and actively train in line

Function:         work with a focus upon line construction, operation and maintenance of the utility’s electrical system.

 

Essential Functions:

  1. Works with other apprentices and First Class Linemen to construct and maintain power lines within the scope of training and certification.
  1. Drives and maintains Cooperative-owned vehicles and equipment.
  1. Studies and learns required job knowledge and skills in order to advance in a timely manner through the complete apprenticeship program.
  1. Inspects tools and personal protective equipment.
  1. Obtains and maintains a South Carolina Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  1. Completes required documentation in a timely manner.
  1. Communicates, using equipment provided by the Cooperative, in accordance with FCC regulations, company regulations and policy.
  1. Maintains a clean and orderly work place whether on company property or at a job site.
  1. Attends and participates in Annual Meeting of members, as assigned.
  1. Performs other duties as assigned, including the replacement of other personnel in their positions for short periods of time as required.

PERFFORMANCE STANDARDS

Essential Functions and Performance Standards

  1. Works with other apprentices and First Class Linemen to construct and maintain power lines within the scope of training and certification
    1. Digs pole and anchor holes manually or with mechanical equipment.
    2. Frames poles to the standards required for the job and attaches ground wires on the ground.
    3. Frames erect poles and attaches guys.
    4. Sets poles, anchors, ground rods, and guys.
    5. Operates a winch line to pull heavy loads.
    6. Makes connections of meter hook ups, transformers and other line.
    7. Lays and makes connections of underground cables.
    8. Prepares terminations and installs transformers for new underground installation.
    9. Sets and removes barricades, flags, signs, and flares; directs pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
    10. Hooks up single-phase transformer connections using the correct configuration.
    11. Installs conduit to provide a passageway for underground power cables.
    12. Installs proper signs on equipment.
    13. Participates in tailgate conference to plan work assignments.
    14. Informs the Crew Chief or Supervisor of any unsafe conditions.
  2. Drives and maintains Cooperative-owned vehicles and equipment.
    1. Ensures vehicles are fueled and ready.
    2. Keeps trucks stocked with inventory.
    3. Keeps vehicles clean.
    4. Keeps truck interior and exterior neat.
    5. Keeps tools and equipment organized.
    6. Performs vehicle and equipment inspections.
    7. Complies with all applicable motor vehicle laws.
  3. Studies and learns required job knowledge and skills to advance through the apprenticeship program.
    1. Becomes familiar with job training regulations.
    2. Becomes First Aid and CPR certified and renews as needed.
    3. Learns proper use of materials, tools, and equipment.
    4. Attends training sessions as assigned.
    5. Becomes climber qualified and maintains climbing skills.
    6. Becomes pole top and bucket rescue certified and maintains certification.
    7. Demonstrates proficiency in OJT tasks within specified timeframes.
  4. Inspects tools and personal protective equipment.
    1. Inspects tools and PPE before use.
    2. Replaces defective or damaged materials immediately.
    3. Checks first aid kits for proper supply levels.
    4. Inspects fire extinguisher on truck.
    5. Inspects rubber gloves and protectors daily.
  5. Obtains and maintains a South Carolina Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
    1. Obtains SC CDL within 180 days of employment.
    2. Reports any vehicle violations or accidents promptly.
    3. Notifies employer of any traffic citations.
    4. Meets all DOT requirements to maintain CDL.
  6. Completes required documentation in a timely manner.
    1. Completes Daily Vehicle Inspection Reports and reports issues.
    2. Submits completed reports weekly.
    3. Completes quarterly vehicle and tool inspection reports.
    4. Documents pole climbs and submits quarterly.
    5. Uses software applications for daily tasks.
  7. Communicates using Cooperative-provided equipment in accordance with FCC and company regulations.
    1. Responds when called in a timely manner.
    2. Speaks slowly and clearly on radio.
  8. Maintains a clean and orderly workplace.
    1. Maintains and securely stores Cooperative tools, equipment, and material.
    2. Ensures consumer property is respected and work areas are left clean.
    3. Disposes of scrap material and debris after job completion.
  9. Attends and participates in Annual Meeting of members, as assigned.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned.
